Epilepsy & seizure disorders
Thoughtful care for seizures and their impact.
Understanding the condition
Seizures are episodes of altered electrical activity in the brain. Epilepsy can involve recurrent seizures, but a single seizure does not always mean epilepsy.
Common signs and symptoms
- Episodes of loss of awareness or unexplained staring
- Jerking movements, falls or confusion after an episode
What an assessment may involve
Assessment may include a description from a witness, neurological examination, an EEG and imaging where appropriate. Safety and daily-life concerns are part of the discussion.
When to seek help
Seek medical assessment after a first seizure. Call 112 for a seizure lasting more than five minutes, repeated seizures without recovery, injury or breathing problems.
