Understanding the condition

Transcranial Doppler is an ultrasound test that measures blood flow through some of the brain’s blood vessels. It is used for selected clinical questions and does not replace all other imaging.

• A test may be considered as part of a specialist vascular assessment
• The decision depends on your history and other findings

What an assessment may involve

The clinician will explain why a test might help, its limitations and how findings relate to your care. Current availability must be confirmed with the hospital or clinic.

When to seek help

Ask your treating team whether this investigation is relevant and available. New stroke symptoms need emergency care, not an outpatient test.
