Understanding epilepsy & seizure first aid

Simple ways to keep someone safe during a seizure.

Keep the person safe

Stay calm, time the seizure and move hazards away. Cushion their head if possible. Do not restrain them and never put anything in their mouth.

After the shaking stops

If the person is breathing, place them on their side and stay with them as they recover. Do not offer food or drinks until fully alert. Follow any known individual emergency care plan.

When to call 112

Call for emergency help for a first seizure, one lasting more than five minutes, repeated seizures without recovery, difficulty breathing or a serious injury.
